THE WARMTH OF SLUMBER

My old friend is cold
in his bed in the home;
we lay an extra blanket
about his shoulders and

EVENING

The fading light makes no sound
as it sinks into the dark, blue-grey
ocean of sky. There is no song to
accompany the descent of night;
the silence leaves us alone.

ROOF SHOUT

Under the roof,
beneath the rays
of the sun falling
in the western sky,

Fear of the creeping tide
runs the heart aground

Too long the slumber
and the fear of the creeping tide
that stupefies the wonder
and the dreaming of stars.

COMPANION

Though my name you do not know
Will you reach into the cold shadows,
Pluck me frozen from the snow
Will you pull the nails from my hand,
Wipe away the blood that flows.

HOW IT IS

Sometimes I want the return
of my possibilities that have been
eroded by the years,
narrowed by the failing light,
exhausted by the long road;
other times I am content with
the folding of my arms,
the smoke from my pipe
drifting heavenwards,
a little mid-day slumber.
